GR-20-CORE Testing

Generic Requirements for Optical Fiber and Optical Fiber Cable

GR-20-CORE, Generic Requirements for Optical Fiber and Optical Fiber Cable, documents the performance and reliability testing requirements to qualify optical fibers and optical fiber cables. This test program applies only to singlemode fibers.

Silica fibers are constructed with cylindrical cores. Both components (fiber and core) are able to guide light signals through the fiber which is protected by a layer of coating material. A buffer and/or core tube is protruded from each fiber which then forms the cable core. Several layers of protective sheathing are then used to form the cable and are also able to yield high levels of external friction strength (typically tested to the conditions in TIA/EIA-455-33 and TIA/EIA-455-38 for Tensile Strength). Usage of the optical fibers and/or fibber ribbons allows the product to be flexible for installation in the field. The overall sleek design of the product makes installation in narrow passageways such as air-ducts and trays possible.

When deployed in the field, a GR-20 tested fiber protects the optical signal from external outdoor hazards. For example, the fiber maintains the integrity of the optical signal from an outside plant into different sections of an apartment building.
