Ultraviolet (UV) and Weathering Testing at Experior Labs

Experior Labs has the capability to meet or exceed the requirements for American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), military (MIL-STD, MIL-PRF, etc) and many other industry standards for ultraviolet (UV) testing of materials. Customized tests are also available such as solar radiation, fluorescent light exposure and accelerated exposure. Our facility is capable of performing the following UV specifications,

  • Cycle Type: UV radiation or condensation (no radiation)
  • UV Type: UVA or UVB
  • Exposure Time: Any, customer specified
  • Irradiance Level: Up to 1.10 W/m^2
  • Temperature: Up to 90 Degrees Celsius

Examples of UV Standards Performed at Our Facility

Our ISO accreditated laboratory can conduct a wide range of standards such as fluorescent exposure of plastics (ASTM D4329), or rubber deterioration (ASTM D1148-07) just to name a few. A common standard used for UV light testing is ASTM G 154 which covers the principles and procedure for replicating the effects of materials exposed to sunlight. Another common standard is MIL-STD-810 method 505.5 which tests material used for military and defense environments. The effects of solar radiation and direct heat are evaluated and will help determine if UV exposure is detrimental to the material. Experience is crucial in handling and documenting material before and after exposure, and the method used to measure each property.

Often, test method standards are written for a specific material. ISO 4892-3 for example, simulates accelerated weathering for plastics. Experior’s lab is capable of testing to this standard which specifies that, under controlled conditions, the plastic be exposed to various levels of UV radiation, heat and moisture. The conditions can be adjusted to match those of ISO 4892-3. The lamp can be 290nm to 400nm for both UVA and UVB. The black-standard temperature can be controlled from 25 – 70 deg C (we are capable of going up to 90 deg C). The exposure type can be dry, condensation, or water spray.

Other UV tests our southern California laboratory can perform include but not limited to ASTM G155 – 13 – Standard Practice for Operating Xenon Arc Light Apparatus for Exposure of Non-Metallic Materials, ASTM D2565 – 99(2008) – Standard Practice for Xenon-Arc Exposure of Plastics Intended for Outdoor Applications, and ASTM G151 – 10 – Standard Practice for Exposing Nonmetallic Materials in Accelerated Test Devices that Use Laboratory Light Sources. These standard aims to simulate weathering effects on products when directly or indirectly exposed to sunlight. Visual inspection is typically performed after the test is complete.
